Don’t Fall For Satan’s Lies
Today’s video is an excerpt from my Wilderness Wanderings Series from several years ago. If you want to get the full context of the story, I encourage you to read Numbers 22-25. The focus today, as the title states, is to remind us to beware of Satan’s attempts to deceive us. I hope it will be a blessing to you.
How Do You Deal With Life’s Interruptions?
I stared at the question on my computer screen and laughed out loud. Since I sat down to prepare for my Bible study lesson, I have had numerous phone calls, text messages, and other disturbances. How do I deal with interruptions? If my growing annoyance and frustration with others are any indication, not very well, it would seem.
How about you? How do you handle rained-out picnics, canceled vacations due to family illness, or guests showing up on your one quiet night, surprising you with their impromptu visit and expectations of dinner? How do you react when the dog doesn’t quit barking, the kids won’t quit fighting, the boss won’t quit complaining, and the world around you won’t stop asking for more of you?
What Were You Thinking?
During my devotion time this morning, I had an “aha” moment while reading another familiar passage. I’ve been making it a practice to stop and think about every word in each verse instead of just getting the gist of the verse. This has opened my eyes to many things, and this morning was no different.
Do all things without murmurings and disputings: - Philippians 2:14
In the past, when I read this verse, I summed it up like this: do everything without complaining—a command which is far more difficult to obey than it appears at first glance. However, as I broke the verse down into individual words this morning, I had to ask, What’s the difference between murmuring and disputing?
One Last Day
As I strolled with Tess on our daily walk, I pondered the inquiry. It’s a question that’s been asked more times than any of us could ever count: if you knew you only had one day left to live, how would you spend that day?
What would I do? For starters, I would throw the words “diet” and “exercise” out the window and pig out on all my favorite foods. After all, if it’s my last day on earth, I don’t have to worry about weight gain, right? I’d also want to spend as much time as possible with the ones I love.
Tired of Playing Games
A little over a week ago, I was reading through the Lewis Carroll classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It had been so long since I had read the tale that I wanted to refresh my memory. At one point, I laughed aloud while wiping tears from my cheeks. It wasn’t that the scene was that comical but rather that I could relate so very well at that moment.
While playing croquet with the Queen of Hearts, Alice soon discovers that the game is anything but ordinary. The mallets were live flamingoes, and live hedgehogs served as the croquet balls. The card soldiers bent backward to form the arches through which the balls could roll. The problems with this setup were many.
Why Should We Study the Bible?
It’s funny how the most familiar verses can also be the most overlooked and unexplored. Take, for example, II Timothy 3:16. This is a verse I’ve been able to quote since I was a child, but it wasn’t until a few days ago that I realized I didn’t fully understand what it was saying.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: — II Timothy 3:16
As I looked at the verse with fresh eyes, I saw what seemed to be two redundancies. Doctrine means teaching, but doesn’t instruction also mean teaching? If so, why is “teaching” listed twice? Likewise, isn’t reproof simply a form of correction, so why is it, too, listed twice? At first glance, it appears the verse could be summed up to say that all scripture is profitable for teaching and correction, right?
Finding Your Purpose, Part Two: Using What God Has Given You
God has given each of us a variety of talents and skills. The question is, what are we doing with them? Are we squandering them on selfish living, or are we using them for His honor and glory?
Finding Your Purpose, Part One: God Knows Your Name
You may not be famous or well-known, but in God's eyes, you're important--so important that He knows you and calls you by name.
Faith in the Darkness
I was recently reading a book by Dr. David Jeremiah, and I came across a quote that made me stop and think. He said, “If our faith doesn’t work in the darkness, it’s not much good in the light.”
I immediately thought of a flashlight. Have you ever tried to use a flashlight in the daytime? It’s pretty useless, isn’t it? Even the brightest flashlights do little to illuminate things in the daylight because the light is already present in the form of the sun. On the contrary, when using a flashlight at night, the difference is impressive. While the light may not chase away all the shadows, it certainly helps to illuminate our path and alleviate our fears.
It All Boils Down to Love
In my Bible study time, I’ve been looking at the various passages of Scripture that talk about putting on or putting off things. The gist of these verses is that we are to put off the old ways, the sinful ways, and the ways of the flesh and put on the new man, the one who longs to be like Christ. It’s been an insightful study, and I’ve learned much.
As I closed out my study yesterday, I read Colossians 3:14, which reads, And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
