In those moments when life's storms seem unending, we may find ourselves questioning God's intentions. Is He being cruel? Has He forgotten about us? These are natural human responses when we're in the midst of a tempest. The disciples faced a similar struggle, and it's a reminder that we're not alone in our doubts and fears.

But here's the beautiful part: Just as Jesus walked on the water toward the disciples, He draws near to us in the midst of our storms. He wants to calm our hearts and assure us that we are not alone. He is there, even when we can't immediately recognize His presence.

Faith in the Darkness

I was recently reading a book by Dr. David Jeremiah, and I came across a quote that made me stop and think. He said, “If our faith doesn’t work in the darkness, it’s not much good in the light.”

I immediately thought of a flashlight. Have you ever tried to use a flashlight in the daytime? It’s pretty useless, isn’t it? Even the brightest flashlights do little to illuminate things in the daylight because the light is already present in the form of the sun. On the contrary, when using a flashlight at night, the difference is impressive. While the light may not chase away all the shadows, it certainly helps to illuminate our path and alleviate our fears.

How Do I Know I Can Trust God?

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. - James 1:8

To be double-minded essentially means we’re wishy-washy. In our Christian walk, it manifests itself in not knowing whether God can be trusted. At times, we think He can, but when circumstances go crazy, we begin to doubt. We believe God is good, but then we question whether that’s true. Double-minded. Wishy-washy. Unstable.

But what if we could know, without a doubt, that God can be trusted? What if we could prove it to ourselves every time we started to question God’s goodness? Fortunately, we can do it by meditating upon one single chapter of the Bible.

I Believe. . .a Little Bit

We all know the story of this great storm and how Jesus spoke peace to the winds and waves. We’re also well-acquainted with his rebuke to the disciples, but only recently as I explored this concept of “just a little” did I notice Jesus’ exact wording. He didn’t say the disciples didn’t have any faith. He said they had a little. Just a bit. Enough to wake up Jesus, believing He could help, but not so much to calm their terrified hearts. A little faith.
