The Comfort of God’s Everlasting Arms

Have you ever noticed how parents instinctively position themselves to catch their children? Whether teaching a toddler to walk or spotting a child learning to ride a bike, their arms are always underneath, ready to catch their precious ones when they fall. It's a natural response—one born of love and an intense desire to protect.

This morning, as I was reading in Deuteronomy, a familiar verse caught my attention in a new way. "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms" (Deuteronomy 33:27). I've read this verse countless times, but today, that word "underneath" jumped off the page and grabbed my heart.

Why underneath? Of all the ways God could have positioned His arms—around us, beside us, or even above us—He specifically tells us His everlasting arms are underneath. Could it be that our loving Father knew we would fall? That in His infinite wisdom, He positioned Himself to catch us when—not if—we stumble?

Just last week, I was preparing for a massive community event we were hosting, and everything seemed to be going wrong. With my ongoing health issues already wearing me down, I discovered that our helpers had been called away to another obligation. That left Jason and me to handle most of the setup ourselves. As I looked at the mountain of tasks before us, I felt myself spiritually falling. The overwhelm was winning, and my attitude was heading south faster than a Welsh raindrop.

But then I felt it—that gentle catching, that spiritual safety net of God's everlasting arms. Through a timely verse in my morning devotions, some uplifting songs on the radio, and His gentle whisper assuring me that everything was under His control, God caught me before I hit bottom. His arms were already there, waiting underneath my falling spirit. Despite feeling tired, unwell, and overwhelmed, I found strength in those everlasting arms. Not only did we manage to complete all the preparations, but the event turned out to be a tremendous success. Once again, God proved faithful in catching me when I was falling and lifting me higher than I could have gone on my own.

You see, God doesn't position His arms underneath us as an afterthought. He's not scrambling to catch us as we fall. No, His arms have always been there, eternally ready, eternally strong, eternally supporting. It's a proactive position of love, not a reactive response to our failures.

Perhaps you're falling today—maybe not physically, but emotionally or spiritually. The weight of life's burdens might be pulling you down, or perhaps disappointment has knocked your feet out from under you. Take heart, dear friend. Those everlasting arms are already underneath you. You can't fall farther than God can catch you.

Our Father's position tells us something beautiful about His character. He's not standing at a distance, arms crossed, waiting to scold us when we fall. Instead, He's right there, arms open and underneath, ready to catch us, support us, and lift us back to our feet. What a comfort to know that even in our falling, we're falling into the arms of love!
