Just Be

I hope you don’t grow weary of devotions about our dog, Tess, but my dogs always have so much to teach me.  Or, should I say, the Lord has much to teach me through my dogs?

This morning, Jason and I were discussing our precious pup, who, at that moment, was snuggled between us on the bed in utter contentment.  We contemplated which she enjoyed more—eating or sleeping.  Then, we realized walking, hiking, and going on a card ride all topped the list of Tess’ favorite things.  Ultimately, we agreed that she didn’t care what she was doing as long as she was with her people.  Her favorite thing in life is just to be with us.

Immediately, I was convicted.  There are things in life I enjoy and things I’d rather not have to do.  I, too, relish a good walk or hike.  A perfect day involves plenty of hot tea and a quiet place to read, write, or both.  Unfortunately, most days involve mundane tasks like doing dishes, folding laundry, paying bills, etc.

It’s easy to grow discontent.  It’s common to become weary in well-doing and grumble about certain tasks.  If only we could be more like Tess and be content to be in the presence of our Master.  The job doesn’t matter.  The environment makes no difference.  Nope, all that matters is that my Master is with me.  When I’m with Him, I’m happy no matter what I’m doing.

I admit I’m not quite there yet, which is probably why this lesson hit me square between the eyes this morning.  I often have a tendency to complain over the tasks I don’t want to do and finding ways to blame them for not accomplishing other things that I do want to do.  I’m so focused on the task and my dislike for it that I forget to focus on what truly matters—I’m not alone.

The way I see it, I have two choices.  One, I can be mad about the jobs I dislike and have a terrible attitude, which helps no one and hurts many.  Or two, I can do the job without complaint and focus on the fact that I can simply be in the presence of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  It’s really a no-brainer, isn’t it?

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. - I Corinthians 10:31

Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. - Psalm 16:11
