Walking the Line of Faith
Have you ever watched a tightrope walker? It's fascinating how they maintain their balance, shifting their weight ever so slightly from one side to the other. One wrong move could spell disaster. I often feel like that tightrope walker in my spiritual life, especially when it comes to finding the balance between doing and waiting.
Just yesterday, I sat at my desk, staring at a blank document on my computer screen. I had a Bible study to prepare, several blog posts due, and ministry correspondence waiting for responses. The weight of responsibility pressed heavily on my shoulders. Should I forge ahead with my plans, or was God trying to tell me to wait? Was my drive to complete these tasks stemming from my perfectionist nature, or was it truly God's leading?
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5). It's a verse I know well, but putting it into practice? That's another story entirely (and a devotion for another day).
I've learned the hard way that there's a delicate balance between being a good steward of our responsibilities and trying to control everything ourselves. It's like driving a car. We're behind the wheel, but God owns the vehicle and knows the destination. We need to steer and operate the pedals, but He's the one who provided the car, the road, and the ability to drive in the first place.
The Bible gives us examples of both waiting and working. Noah built the ark while waiting for the flood. Joseph administered Egypt's resources while waiting for the famine. David strengthened himself in the Lord while waiting to become king. They all worked diligently within their current circumstances while trusting God for future outcomes.
"But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint" (Isaiah 40:31). Notice this verse doesn't say they shall sit and do nothing. It speaks of mounting up, running, and walking!
So what's the answer? I believe it's found in daily surrender coupled with faithful stewardship. We work diligently in God's strength while resting completely in His sovereignty. We make our plans but hold them loosely, allowing God to direct our steps.
When I finally bowed my head at my desk that day, I prayed, "Lord, I surrender these tasks to You. Show me what to prioritize and how to proceed." The peace that followed wasn't because I suddenly knew exactly what to do, but because I remembered Who was really in control.
Perhaps you're also struggling with this balance today. Remember, it's not about perfect performance but about persistent surrender. Work diligently, but keep your heart tuned to His voice. Make your plans, but be ready for His redirections. After all, the goal isn't to master the tightrope; it's to follow the Master who holds the rope.
