Bees on the Brain
For the past few weeks, I’ve been busy co-planning a mother/daughter luncheon. We decided on a bee theme and set about finding decorations, paper goods, and gifts centered around the theme. It’s been a lot of fun, but I can officially say I have bees on the brain. I dream in yellow and black. Every time I use the word “be,” I turn it into some form of “bee” pun. Everywhere I look, I see things that would fit the theme, though not necessarily the budget. My mind is abuzz with bees! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)
Even in my quiet time with the Lord, the luncheon theme invaded my thoughts. But, for once, I welcomed the intrusion because it was a true blessing to me. I was reading my favorite book of the Bible: the Psalms.
How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. - Psalm 139:17-18
Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. - Psalm 40:5
Let those verses sink in for a moment. How precious are God’s thoughts. How great is the sum of them. They are innumerable! I may have bees on the brain, but God has me on His mind. And you. He thinks about us all the time. He can’t stop thinking about us. Morning, noon, and night, He’s thinking about you and me. Is that humbling or what?
And in case the inner pessimist is wondering what kind of thoughts He’s thinking, the Bible makes it clear. They are precious thoughts!
“The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.”
— Zephaniah 3:17
“ He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.”
— Psalm 18:19
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.”
— Psalm 37:23
“The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.”
— Psalm 147:11
“For the Lord taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.”
— Psalm 149:4
“The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.”
— Jeremiah 31:3
“Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.”
— Matthew 10:29-31
Mind blown! To think the God of Heaven, Creator of all there is, thinks about me in such an affectionate way. I could understand if He were frustrated at my lack of self-control or exasperated by my feeble attempts to be holy. That would make sense to me. But, no, it’s not like that. He rejoices over me with singing. Seriously? Me? He delights in me. What is there to delight in? He takes pleasure in me. He thinks I’m of great value. Just, wow!
Imagine God sitting on His throne in Heaven with a far-off look on His face as He thinks of you. Now, focus on His mouth. That’s not a snarl, a frown, or a grimace. It’s a smile—a genuine smile. Is that amazing or what?
I don’t know if I’ll ever understand this. I believe it because the Bible makes it clear, but it certainly doesn’t make sense to me. But, that’s God. His ways don’t always make sense. I don’t know why He loves me or why His thoughts of me bring Him joy, but I sure am glad it’s true. And it certainly makes life a little easier imagining God looking on with a smile rather than a scowl.
God loves me. He thinks about me all the time. And He’s happy with me. That’s certainly enough to make my day. How about you?
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to “bee” getting back to work on the mother/daughter luncheon. (Sorry! Last one, I promise.)
