What’s Your Perspective on Prayer?

I’ve had a devotion on my mind this morning, which I’ve contemplated before, but honestly, I can’t remember if I’ve ever shared it with you. Either way, I feel it’s what I need to write about this morning, so here goes.

I begin each morning with my quiet time, which includes Bible study, prayer, and journaling.  One of the sections in my journal is labeled “Gratitude,” and each day, I list something I’m grateful for.  Some days, it’s family.  On other days, I’m thankful for my beautiful home.  But today, as I contemplated what I wanted to list, I noticed the music playing in the background and tuned in enough to recognize the tune of Sweet Hour of Prayer.  Suddenly, I knew exactly what I wanted to write in my journal.

I’ll be the first to admit that prayer can be difficult. It takes time out of our busy schedules.  It requires focus and concentration, which is often difficult to come by (at least for me).  Some days, I don’t know what to say, while other days, there are so many thoughts on my mind that my words come out in a jumble.  And honestly, I often walk away from my prayer closet wondering why I wasted my time because I felt like my prayers didn’t go past the ceiling.

Prayer isn’t easy.  There’s no denying it.  But have you ever stopped to consider what a privilege it is to be able to pray?  To think that we can get ahold of the Lord of all at any time and from anywhere is incredible.  To know that the Creator of the universe cares enough about me to hear me talk is extraordinary.  And what a comfort to realize that there is nothing too big or small for Him to deal with.

I used to view I Thessalonians 5:17, which reads “Pray without ceasing,” as a command that seemed impossible to follow.  I mean, if all I do is pray all the time, how will I ever accomplish anything else?  It doesn’t feel realistic, does it?

But when I view prayer from the proper perspective, I realize the verse is a blessing.  It’s not intended to make us feel inferior by giving us a task we could never perform.  Instead, it’s there as an encouragement and a reminder that no matter where we are or what we’re facing, we can tap into the greatest power source of all—prayer.  The verse isn’t a prison; it’s the key to freedom.

When God commanded us to pray without ceasing, He basically told us, “I’m always here to listen.  When you’re at home, you can talk to me.  When you’re at work, I can still hear you.  When you’re driving, walking, or chasing the kids around the house, you can share your thoughts with me, and I’ll share mine with you.  We can talk any time or all the time.  I’ll be here.  Just call on me.”

I’m blown away!  I know what my prayers sound like.  I understand just how whiny I can be at times.  And as for what goes on inside my head?  Well, that’s just a crazy labyrinth of thoughts, ideas, and a weird selection of movie lines and song lyrics I’ve collected through the years. To think God wants me to share it all with Him.  It takes my breath away.

The next time you’re feeling weary about praying, check your perspective.  Are you viewing prayer as a duty or delight?  Instead of thinking of it as something you have to do or are supposed to do, try viewing it as a privilege. Consider what a blessing it is that the Lord of the universe wants to spend time with you.  I guarantee you’ll see prayer in a different light.  It still won’t be easy, but it will feel worth it.
