Rekindling Our Zeal

Have you ever stopped to think about the word "enthusiasm"? It's a word we use often to describe our passion or excitement for something, but did you know that its etymology has a fascinating link to the divine? The word "enthusiasm" comes from the Greek "enthousiasmos" (ἐνθουσιασμός), which can be broken down into two parts: "en" (ἐν) meaning "in" or "within," and "theos" (θεός) meaning "god." In ancient Greek, "enthousiasmos" referred to a state of divine inspiration or possession by a god.

Isn't it fascinating how language evolves? While the original concept of "enthusiasm" was related to being filled with or inspired by a divine presence, the meaning has evolved over time to describe intense excitement or zeal for any cause or interest. But as Christians, I believe we should reclaim the original meaning of enthusiasm and apply it to our relationship with God.

As believers, we have the most fantastic news ever to share! We have the hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit living within us. That's something to be genuinely enthusiastic about! In fact, the Bible tells us in Ephesians 5:18 (KJV), "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit." While we may not be "possessed by a god" in the ancient Greek sense, we are filled with the Holy Spirit. And that should fill us with excitement and vitality!

But what does it look like to be filled with the Spirit and live with enthusiasm for God? For me, it means waking up each day with a sense of purpose and joy, knowing that I am a child of God and that He has a plan for my life. It means stepping out of my comfort zone and sharing the gospel with others, even when it's scary or uncomfortable. It means being a light in a dark world and showing others the love and grace of Jesus.

Living with enthusiasm for God also means being grateful for the blessings He has given us and using them to glorify Him. For me, that means using my writing and teaching gifts to encourage others in their faith and share the hope of the gospel. It means being a faithful wife to Jason and a loving "mommy" to little Tess. It means being organized and using my time wisely to serve the Lord and care for my family and ministry.

But living with enthusiasm for God also means recognizing that I am not perfect and need His grace and strength to live the life He has called me to. It means being willing to admit when I'm wrong and asking for forgiveness. It means being patient with myself and others, even when things don't go as planned. It means trusting in God's sovereignty and knowing He is in control, even when the world around me seems chaotic and uncertain.

My friends, as Christians, we have every reason to be the most enthusiastic people alive! Let's reclaim the original meaning of enthusiasm and live with excitement and passion for God. Let's be filled with the Spirit and use our gifts and blessings to glorify Him. And let's trust in His sovereignty and grace, knowing He is always with us and will never leave or forsake us.
