A Father Like No Other

A while back, Jason and I were watching the sci-fi show Andromeda. On this particular episode (as with most episodes), the crew was battling enemy forces. During the conflict, the ship lost its sensors and propulsion capabilities and was left drifting through space. As the team discussed their predicament and options, one member spoke up. “Blind and crippled. If this ship were my child, I’d drown it.”

Immediately, I was overwhelmed with gratitude that my Heavenly Father doesn’t have the same attitude. While I may not be blind and crippled, Heaven knows I have my share of issues. Some days I stumble more than I walk. Other days, my heart is full of negativity and complaints. Often, it feels like I’m blind as I stagger around, trying to figure out which way to go. Yes, I am FAR from perfect. As the old song states, “I can’t even walk without You holding my hand.”

I’m unworthy. I’m needy. I’m unreliable and unfaithful to my Lord. Yes, He never casts me away. He continues to love me, help me, comfort me, and guide me. Like any good Father, He loves me at my worst and urges me to be my best. He is kind and merciful. He is gracious and patient. He doesn’t condone my wrongdoing, but neither does my sin separate me from His love. He is a good, good Father, and in that, He makes me want to be a better child.

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

— Lamentations 3:22-23
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

— Romans 8:38-39
